Light Stand bag alternative. - 11-01-2011, 09:40 AM

I was using a baseball bat bag to haul around my light stands, umbrellas, and all my accessories. It was cheap ($39), had wheels, and easily available for purchase at many local stores. The only thing it couldn't carry was my Avenger A475B Boom Stand. The boom stand was too tall for the bag. Other than that it worked great!

The only downside was the bottom of the bag wasn't durable enough. I've been through two in two years. Not too bad but I found a better solution.

This is a Travel Cover for golf bags. Academy sells then for $79. This bag has super padding, reinforced bottom, wheels, and PLENTY of storage space for all my light stands.

My mom said these were ugly.

No, seriously, the new one might do the trick. And at $79, it's cheaper than if it said it was for specifically photography.

Curious, how were the bottoms not holding up? Was the bottom coming off at the seam, or were individual holes forming? I could see just putting in a small layer of foam on the bottom might help. But, if the weight of the things were causing the seams to give way, that's a more serious issue.

Lately, I've been going minimal style with just two light stands and one umbrella carried by hand. Would be nice to have one of these, tho.

I use a hard case from academy... Got it for like $70 but its nice and it has wheels. I'll put my two heavy avengers in it along with a reflector, reflector boom arm, sand bags and a small camera bag which hold a couple of flashes and accessories.

This case makes it very easy to take into hotels etc and shoot since nobody realizes its lighting equipment. they automatically think its just a set of golf clubs.

Dayum! And here I was thinking about getting rid of my hard sided golf travel bag!

Abel, you've just given me a re-use for it.

Now, how about those SCUBA Diving Drysuits taking up space in my garage. Got any ideas for those?
