HSS off camera How To ?? - 02-15-2012, 06:16 PM

my eyes hurt from The Strobist and I can't find an answer to my Q. How do I shoot HSS off camera? Is Pocket Wizard the only way? I have a 430 ex II. I eventually am going to buy strobes (prob Elinchrom D-light-it-4) and want to freeze skateboarders, BMX, etc. for fun. Like this shoot Kelby did on Google +

how is he shooting High Speed with a strobe?

Thank You all!

Im not sure that he is shooting HSS in that shot... he's using an elinchrom quadra with a skyport transmitter... I would think hes limited to his camera's sync speed on that one.

im assuming thats a d4 with a sync speed of 1/250th

Abel is right, the Skyport triggers are limited to 1/250th in their 'speed' mode.

ELINCHROM - EL-Skyport Transmitter SPEED

For me, I tested my RadioPoppers PX at 1/6400th on my D3s

ouch, those PW are spensive and they punish canon users by making those the highest priced!

Skyports will sync at 1/1000th if camera is capable such as with medium format leaf shutters.

The Pocketwizard mini tt's can sync to 1/8000th as well as RadioPoppers PX's, these triggers run about 200-250 each.

So, I have to ask the Canon guys here...

Greg has 1 430 EX II speedlight and a 5d2, can he achieve HSS with his current setup if a trigger and receiver were added.

my bad for getting off topic. I was too focused on the kelby image he posted.

Option 1

Add a Canon St-E2 to his camera and trigger his existing 430exII in HSS.

The upside is: cheaper to get into
The downside: line of sight limited and can have issues in direct sunlight

Option 2
The pocket wizard combo as described.

The upside is: great range, radio signal vs IR line of sight
The downside: more expensive getting transmitter and receiver

there is an option 3, the setup Sonny uses... Cant describe it as I dont know the details but it uses option 2 and some other piece that gets rid of the line of sight issue.

Sonny has a combination of the RadioPopper P1 system along with the ST-E2 on camera, with the transmitter on top of the ST-E2, then on his slaves, the P1 receivers on the 530 EX's

That setup if purchased new..

ST-E2 - 220 ish
RadioPopper PX transmitter - 250
RadioPopper PX receiver - 250 each
530 EX II - 300+ i presume

I presume the 430 EX II can do HSS?

depending on how "far" off camera, you can start with a long canon sync cord.

thank you all I really appreciate it, I know HSS has been discussed before regarding the ND filters.

Maybe Kelby was shooting at 1/250, he posted a bunch of shots on Google + and they were pretty well frozen so I was just assuming. Always learnin' here :-)

happy shooting
