Canon 7d and 580exii question - 02-20-2012, 10:35 PM

Can someone please explain to me how using FEL works using my mounted 580exii. I know my 7d meters without the flash but I'm assuming it should also meter using FEL right? does it work the same way when I am triggering the 580ex remotely using the flip up flash? Thank You this is my first post.
