i meant does reflection off the color make any difference... But yes, i realize the color i chose will determine my status as both a photographer and as a person.

I actually might leave out the stand as well, and get a manfroto or the like more heavy duty one.

Thank you all for the advice!!! Placing order later today. I think i'll go with the black color :) hmm.. maybe yellow... I'm so conflicted

Scott, what color are yours? does it make any diff?

Again, thank you all for the comments and links and whatnot.

Best wishes,
Ross
My 1600 is black and the 800 is Yellow. I don't think the color will make much difference unless you use one of those contained umbrella softboxes where the head is inside the brolly. I still doubt you will get much of a color cast. I got different colors so I could tell which was which at a glance.

Haha, good idea on the colors. I think those attachable softbox things actually attach so the colored part is outside the box anyways, so i'm good to go.

I just talked to the alien bee people, got my 10% student discount . yay :) AB400 in yellow + 48" umbrella.

I have the black AB-800, and the brolly box cinches up on the reflector hood, not the housing unit, so the color shouldn't affect it.

Oh, and congrats on your purchase. You are gonna have lots of fun!

Congrats Ross on your purchase. I would have chimmed in earlier. I too have the AB400 & AB800. Good price and good equipment. I like others have plans to increase my stake in AB's.

Have fun. There seems to be a ton of knowledge here and it definitely helps when making large purchases that others have walked down that path already and if they made mistakes (which we ALL have) are willing to share their knowledge so that we don't make those same mistakes.

Thank you :)

Yes, everyone here seems so down to earth and knowledgable. Seems like on other forums people just spew forth information even if they have never done it themselves. They just guess and it really irritates me. I like first hand experience from "real" people, not just people trying to get their .02 in.

Ended up getting the AB stand with the AB400 in yellow. pretty good price after the 10% off, i thought.

thank you all for the help, i really appreciate everyone sharing their experience with me.

Cheers,
Ross

I'd probably order pink and/or green, just because I'm a bit of a non-conformist.

Hate I missed what seems like a great post. I also got a basic light set from Ebay for around $200 that included two lights, stands and umbrellas. given what I later spent on background stands, 2 muslin backgrounds and a larger white umbrella for soft light, I have spent closer to 375 for everything. I am currently using my living room space and moving the coffee table when needed so I understand the tight space. once I get better with indoor setups, I'll upgrade to the Bees myself....
