Rign flash for macro work...? - 04-27-2005, 02:04 PM

I just purchased a Nikon SB-29s ring flash from B&H and got a bad surprise when the flash wouldn't work in TTL. After reading the manual, I found out that the Nikon ring flash does not work in TTL with D-SLR. I can only use it in the Manual settings, which makes me very unhappy. Does anyone have any experience with the Sigma EM-140 DG ring Flash? How do you like it? I am going the send the flash back and I'm thinking about going with the Sigma, since according to the specs. it is compatible with the D70 TTL. Thanks for your help.

Glad to have you back on the board, also on a serious note might want to ask Steve from the club he is a pretty hard core Nikon guy, at least until I use the force and bring him from the dark side. (get it, Nikon lens-dark, Canon lens-light! HA! I kill myself sometimes :) )

Alright Mike, enough with the bad talking about Nikon. Right now I need help with the ring flash. I did talk to Steve before my trip to Big Bend, while looking for a longer lens to take. I used his Sigma 70-200 with the 1.4X in exchange for my Nikon 80-200. The extra 1.4x helped. He'll be using my 200 micro sometime this week, I'll get him hooked in macro.

Well, about the ring flash. Anyone with experience with the Sigma?

Does the flash work good for you? Is it fast to reload? Does the TTL work good with D-SLR?

1. the flash is really nice. coming from my sigma ef-500 flash i was pretty sure that the em140 wasnt going to dissapoint me.
2. you can pop off about 3-4 flashes at full power before having to recharge

Thanks Matt.

I'm waiting for B&H to re-open on Monday, so I can return the Nikon and get me a Sigma. I appreciate your help.
