Canon off camera shoe cord 2 - 04-29-2005, 09:58 AM

I currently use this on my canon film cameras with 540ez flash - will it also work with the 20D and 550ex? Or do I need to buy the ST-E2 Transmittor? Everywhere I have looked for info on this, it doesn't say it CAN'T work with digital, but it doesn't say it DOES either.

Thanks Ben! Someone mentioned this before but I am also wondering if a question exists that would not find it's answer here. Maybe something like - "if you were shipping a Canon ST-E2 transmittor to Kuwait and used the box that the 70-200/4.0L lens came in, but the packing that came with the 20D - and you were close personal friends with John Travolta who would fly you over there around midnight the day you shipped it - would you beat the package to Kuwait and if you did, what online company would have the best price on bullet proof vests?" :)

why wouldnt the off shoe camera cord work? you are basically just extending the connection that is on your camera.

Well, I was told that the 540ez flash wouldn't work with a digital camera, or at least the E-TTL so I guess that's why I was wondering. But you're right - "All EOS bodies" should mean digital or film.

You were told correct...

The 540EZ flash was designed before the evolution of Canon's current digital cameras. The 540EZ flashes automatic mode is what Canon called A-TTL.

Mounting a 540EZ on a digital canon will resort to the minimum (smallest) aperture or the maximum flash sync speed while the camera is in a programmed mode (AV, TV, P).

The Digital camera's were only designed to work with the EX series of flashes. The off-camera cord has nothing to do with it.
