Flash for Nikon D50 - 01-06-2007, 10:27 AM

I had seen the Nikon SB-400 come out, but it didn't seem to give someone a lot of flexibility on its use. I know it is less expensive, but for more features, I am thinking of spending more and going with the Nikon SB-600. The built-in flash is okay, but not the greatest.

I am not a professional; however, I would like to be able to control my lighting as much as possible. I know a lighting course is in my future, just don't know when.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have the SB-600 and love it. It has about the same power as my old SB-25 and can be used remotely with the on camera flash as the trigger. The SB-800 has more power but also more weight and size and unless you are into catherdrals, I'll bet the SB-600 will be what you want. I had a D50 and used this flash on it but have the D200 now and my description of off camera use may not apply to the D50. Even so, the SB-600 will probably be all you want or need.

Wow, this is the first I've heard about the SB 400. Anyone have any experience with it?
I have the SB 600, which I think is an amazing flash and well worth the money.

I think you'll be OK, they have a thin candy shell. I'm surprised you didn't know that.

The SB400 is only $50 less than the SB600. I can see getting it as a second, pocket kind of flash. But as your main flash it's too limited and weak.

It was introduced to coincide with the D40, I believe. It does not tilt up but swivels, I also believe. It is small and reminds you of the very early flashes when people still used bulbs and flashcubes (remember them?). For the money, the SB-600 is just a whole lot more flash, but the SB-400 is kind of cute.

I was looking through the specs at nikonusa.com and it doesn't look like the SB-400 can be remotely fired.

one thing to look at is the SB800 includes a few more items

Diffuison Dome similar to the stofen omni bounce
filter kit
and the 5th battery option and that helps wonders in recycle time as well as battery life
id go with the 800

Don't be afraid to find one of the "old" SB80-dx flashes on E-bay or whatnot.

They are virtually as powerful as the SB-800 and show function perfectly with the D-50. Granted, they don't have the i-TTL, but will serve every other purpose you'll ever need.
