If you look at image 6 you can make out what looks to be an umbrella shaped catch-light. It's fairly far away which creates a more harsh light. It could also be a grid on 7" cone. Hard to tell from these small shots.

A Fresnel could produce something like these too.

looking at pic 18 which shows the light head on I would bet it is a hotlight with a fresnal lens.

Are some fresnals from one of the best companies, not cheap in the least, but they are continious lighting so the housings have to be fan cooled to keep the heat down in the units.

Really though, I don't know how I never saw those before with the hours I've spent surfing B&H. The prices aren't really all that bad...

With 300 hours life for the bulb it costs you $2.50 an hour +electricity to run that one lamp but 10,000 watts is a BIT OF LIGHT!

Also happens that I posted a link to one of the TOP makers of Fresnal systems, there are cheaper ones at B+H, also Mole Richardson units pop up on Ebay on an irregular basis (company has been around a long time so a lot of units are out there in the movie industry where they need continious lighting-some units are big arc lamps).

Well that is there top end unit and when you are lighting a Movie set you may use several of these.

Just looked on ebay last night at that one company and there were all sorts of used units up for sale with one seller from a production company selling these 10K watt babies with bulbs. Most of what is being sold though is in the 1K range or smaller.

I just think it'd be cool to have a 10000 watt light. I was wondering what the wattage of the lights that Hurrell and his ilk used in their Hollywood portraits? Does anyone know?

When I moved into my new house (bought from my dad), there was what I thought was a simple twin floodlight setup in the back porch in a box. My brother told me it was a movie set light... it is mounted witha handle grip on the bottom, and I finally fired it up and WOW!!! I can light up my entire 1/2 acre backyard like daylight! I'll try to dig it out of the pile of boxes again and post a pic.
