I have been into photography for about 1 1/2 years now. Getting the hang of things. I have always been shooting fast glass in low-light conditions.

I want to get started with some studio/flash work. I just need something simple for now, but will be usable in the future. I was looking at AB 800 Beginner package, and throw in a softbox along with it. Alien Bee offers a 10% discount for students, so I will take advantage of that with my student I.D. I currently have the Canon 420ex flash - could that be used as well with the AB setup? I am also searching for wider lens for studio work that won't hurt my wallet. Also - I need a tripod. Been using a monopod for about a year for sports.

Equipment:

Canon 1D
EF 300mm f/2.8L IS
EF 85mm f/1.8
420ex

I have about $1,200 to spend on goodies.

The ABs are a good place to start and you can always add a 1600 if you later need more power. I think your best bet would be to take Mark McCall to lunch and get him to help you get started. He is always willing to help out. Your 85mm is a great studio lens if you can back up enough. For full length work a 50mm f1.8 or f2.0 or a 35mm f2.0 should work out great without breaking the bank.

MAC on Campus - 02-17-2007, 06:43 PM

Actually, for that money, using the MAC on Campus discount, you can get some top of the line Profoto equipment.

You may want to call Mike Wheeler or Jason Jaeger at HCE and ask about it.

There's nothing wrong with Bee's, but Profoto lights are strong, consistent performers.
