flash question - 06-01-2005, 02:53 PM


I'm using the Canon Speedlite 420EX with my 300d. I can take 3 or 4 pics fairly quick but only the 1st photo come out. the others are dark. how can i get the flash to keep up with the camera?

You can't. It takes so much time for that flash to recycle and get ready. That's just the way it is.

so not even a battery pack will help? or what about upgrading to the Canon Speedlite 580EX?

If you're not using NiCD batteries, why not? They decrease the recycle time by almost half.

The 580EX has what's called a "rapid mode" which is about 3 seconds per recycle time so if you're looking for something that's multiple frames per second, I think you're in trouble...

I'ved used the 420EX flash before and the recycle time was very slow. Too slow. It was a major pain. At first I thought it was because my batteries were low, but with, a fresh set it didn't make much of a difference.

since i use my flash alot....i use AA Energizer Rechargeables (2300mAH; NiMH). i have about 4 sets i cycle through.

i pop off about 4 flashes with my sigma before it needs to recharge. there is also another option to decrease the output power for more shots if needed.

I was thinking the same thing. With my Nikon SB-600 I can decrease the flash power to as low as 1/64 power. Of course you don't have nearly as much light, but if it is enough, then the flash can always keep up with the camera.
