Sb-900 - 08-26-2008, 02:22 AM

I picked up my new SB-900 on Friday. I've given it a quick lookover and like the layout, especially the slave and master buttons. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but when I do I'll post some thoughts.

Been using mine now for a few weeks and I don't know if it's me but I've noticed a difference in the quality of light coming out of the thing (for the better).

Light seems to be distributed more evenly, no real hot spots and when used indirectly seems to provide more light than the SB-800 does (not that I have any issues with the SB-800's - I don't).

I initially thought they went too far with all the buttons and controls on the back - overload! but now I appreciate what they did (although I still don't understand what they all do - grin).

I've never used on but have handled one a few weeks back at the Louisiana State PPA convention. I will have to say, the controls in the back are far more superior than one on the SB800 and Canon 580.

Checked one out today, I really love the controls and figuring out how to set up most of it was quite intuitive... To bad I have to check it back in tomorrow along with the d700 and a 14-24

Before you wasted your money, you should have consulted Ken Rockwell; he recommends the SB-400 over any other Nikon Speedlight.

Even Ken Rockwell can be wrong (as good as he is). I've used this a few times now and the amount of light control, the recycle speed and the strength of the light is well worth the investment for me.

And, why would you spend nearly as much for the SB-400 as the SB-600 and lose many of it's features. Sorry, I have to disagree with Ken on this one.

David,

Did you see my ? I disagree with Ken on a lot of things, but his position on shoe mounted flash is going to cost a lot of people money on a flash they don't like(SB-400).

Joe McNally has been raving about his SB900 for a couple weeks now. He has done some very neat things with the 200mm zoom capability. Makes me want one.

I have used many Nikon speedlights over many years. We have been using 6 sb800's for a while now, picked up the sb900 in late July, wow! I do love the sb900. We will soon be replaceing the sb800's. The sb900 is larger but I love the controls and quality of the flash.

Be careful of listening to that guy. Name is Joseph Nicholas Spina...aka "Lilkiwiguy87"...

Apparently he's got National Geographic and Nikon after him for saying he's the 'Director of Photography' for National Geographic and a Nikon NPS member and gear tester while neither are true.

Interesting info on him:

http://geocities.com/spina_expose/

I was wondering why a lot of his info is questionable...
