Question Photogenic 320 and PWII - 03-09-2009, 03:28 PM

Anyone here using this light with PWIIs? I just got mine, but I don't see a way to connect the PW to the light. There is a jack on the back of the light, but it requires the same type of plug that goes into the PW.

By the way, the Photogenic web site states that this light is PW compatible.

I think it's just a 1/8" mono jack to 1/8" mono jack if I remember correctly. Connects to the flash port on the PWII.

If for some reason all you have is stereo, I believe you can pull it out half was and still make it work in a pinch.

Went to RS and got the right connector with mono on both ends.

Don't you hate it when you get something new and find out you are missing one tiny little thing to make it work! LOL

Good thing RS was still open!

Thanks for reminding me to go to RS and pick up a couple of extra cords.

Yes. :-)

It still isn't working though. Got one PW connected to the light; other one is on the camera. The test button on neither unit will fire the strobe. Hmmm...

Just checked the connector I bought, and it's says "audio." Shoot. I think that's all they had. Back to RS tomorrow. Why can't this just be simple? Sigh.

You're welcome. RS is great; they have all sorts of connectors, cables, etc.

audio should work. As long as it's a mono plug and not stereo.

You've probably done this but just in case.

check the batteries in both units.
are the lights flashing. the red lights flash when the unit is turned on
are the units turned on?
are the aB's plugged, turned on. will they flash when you hit the AB test button?
does the PW test button on the receiver activate the light?
Is the PW cord plugged into the wrong hole?
are they on the same channel?

It's most likely pilot error but we're expected to fly a plane without much instruction.

take the PW and the AB (with power cord) to RS and get it working while you're there.

good luck, I share your pain.

Thanks for your help, Tom. Everything looks good with the batteries, connections, red lights flashing, etc. The strobe flashes when the test button is pressed on the back of the light. I compared the connector I bought at RS with the one that came with the light and the PWs, and there is a slight difference. The one I bought definitely isn't mono but rather stereo. Hopefully, RS will have the mono in stock.

I agree with Tom check everything. Music cables are OK but make sure is 1/8 mono jack on both ends.

Have you tried pulling the stereo jack out half way (on both sides - PW and Strobe)?

my experience is that if the light is turned on, and you insert the plug, the flash will fire. I think it's because there really isn't any voltage involved, but the PW just opens the firing circuit on the flash.

Yes, that is what happens. When I first insert the plug into the light (after the plug is in the PW), the strobe fires. I can pull the plug out just a little and it will fire again, but I cannot get a well enough connection in order to have PW wireless capability.

Good thing I don't need it working tonight. I'll get 'er going tomorrow.

classic symptom of trying to use a stereo connector.
make sure the plug is MONO and you'll be OK..
What store do you go to? I need a couple of cords, and they usually don't carry more than a couple at a time...
