Lightbulb Strobist: Who's done it? - 03-18-2009, 09:35 PM

Who here has worked their way through Strobist? I just started with Lighting 102.

I'm always a little late to these parties but figured I'd ask anyway. LOL

I've done parts of them. Just not all of it. However, I've been shooting strobist style for about a year now and just swear by it!

I learned my lighting thru Strobist. And like Matt I swear by it.

In fact I highly recommend it to newbies because its way cheaper and encourages creativity via the DIY route.

I have made my way through the site, have the videos, everything. I just love the look of balancing flash outdoors Every one of my photos involves the use of at least one speedlight.

My home studio is strobist based with 2 Nikon SB 600 flashes. I've found that for portaits and other work on seamless paper, that's all I have really needed. I use regular light stands, umbrellas and a Phototek Softlighter II. I did my nieces wedding using this setup.

I did a lot of reading and strobist and his principles are very sound. It's well worth the time and effort. Take some time to some of the exercises. The real issue is portability. If you are using name brand flashes, they can cost as much as a monolight, so sometimes strobist is not the cheapist way to go.

Jump in, the waters fine:-)

Thanks for the feedback thus far. I've already learned some stuff over the last few days of reading and doing the exercises that I didn't know previously. This is going to be a fun and challenging journey!

Strobist is greatness. I send people that way constantly. It is so much easier to carry a few 580s and PWs than lights and equipment.

Just recently found it and have started working my way though. A little overwhelming since I am so new to everything but defiantly helpful.

z-monster - Your equipment list says "430EX Flash (modified)". Just curious as to what that means.

Whenever I get bored and want to learn some more lighting stuff, I go over there and read two or three posts. I think I've been through about half of it in no particular order. I do recommend it to anyone that asks for photo advice, especially lighting. (Since lighting is a problem in about 75% of the could-be-a-lot-better-if-you'd-done-this photos I've seen, including mine, I recommend the site even when it's not the primary problem.)
