Macro with a 300 L. - 05-17-2009, 04:34 PM

I've been trying my best to get better with my 300 L. Went out today and left the 100 at home so I would have to use the 300. Shot this from about 6 ft. away and did a very minimal crop. Not quite there yet but getting better. I think this is my best effort with the 300 so far.

Tom this looks great. These guys don't seem to land in a good area for a nice back ground most of the time like some of the others, but sometimes I get lucky. I use an old Nikkor AF 75-300/4.5-5.6 for dragonflies and other bugs when I can't get close to with my 105. I also use a 25 mm tube at times for a little more magnification it's a great setup for this type of stuff. I posted these over on the nature forum.... http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...d.php?t=100003

Best time to catch these guys, if possible, is early after a good dewfall when they're still on or near their roost. Easier said than done, but there it is. That's when you can get close to 'em with a macro lens. Jim gives good advice about the long glass and a tube or two.

Tom,

Very nice shot...have you tried any tubes with that 300? BTW, got any spare Canon 300mm f/4.0L IS lenses laying around? I'm in the market for one.

Haven't tried the tubes on it yet. I really needed to get my focus issue settled. Earlier this weekend I was about ready to give it away, but my wife (who gave it to me for Christmas) had something rather ugly to say to about that idea.

I use a Kenko AF 25 mm tube on the 75-300 and it doesn't affect the AF on my D80. What kind of tubes are you using?

I think mine are Pro-optic brand. They are also AF capable, I just haven't tried it out yet. I use them on my 100 mm Macro but always MF when doing macro shots. There are three, 11, 23, and 31, I think. Seems like total was 65. I may be off a little. So far I have been happy with them and they were less than $100.00.

Although I wouldn't technically consider this a macro shot, it's not bad. A different angle with a less cluttered background next time would be an improvement.

The thing about using tubes is you lose infinity focus, but as far as macro use they are really nice...now you've got something else to experiment with when shooting shy subject... give them a try I think you'll be in for a nice surprise. This is the neat thing about digital photography because you can get almost instant feedback and experimenting doesn't cost a darn thing. It's not like shooting a roll of film and getting it processed.

Mine are 13, 21, and 31. They don't autofocus well but are adequate. Went out this afternoon, but the wind was really blowing and I really couldn't get any good shots. I guess I'll try again tomorrow.
