A Mexican Hat from Brazos Bend SP. Made with D80, Nikkor AF 105/2.8D on a tripod Tuesday morning. It's nothing special I just like to shoot a flower once in a while when I'm hunting bugs. Thanks for looking!

Simple but nice. I like the background, and the soft, even lighting works well on the subject. The dew-drops are a nice touch.

Very nice, Jim. Your image captures the details of the flower center (along with the dew drops); nice soft background.

I just love the smooth background, Jim! It would have been cool to use a reflector to bring out a bit more details in the cone at the front.

Thanks for the kind comment everyone!

Roy there's also one of these that has moron colored flower pedals that were in the same area and I made a few photos of it as well... a cool little flower in both versions. I'll post one of them as I get them processed.

Hi Therese! I don't use a reflector anymore... I use my software to add light to selected portions of a photo. I did a version with it lighter and didn't like it as much as I liked this one...I think it includes a bit of secrecy to it like this.

That's pretty darn close Bruce but it's actually a (Ratibida columnifera). They are very similar and both are in the sunflower family.

Thanks for the comment Tom!

Jim, This is a lovely photo! Great composition and DOF and the dew really adds to it.

Interesting on the ID. I thought it was a clasping leaved coneflower too because it was yellow. But it is shaped more like the Mexican hat flower. So, I read up on it and found that the flower petals on the Mexican Hat can be any thing between a dark red and yellow, to all red or all yellow.

I learn so much on this forum.

Patti

Thanks Patti! I guess I should have put a red flower in the post as well.

I'm glad you did. I like the background even better on the red one, but those leaves are a little motheaten . But, seriously, it is a great example of the variety in colors for this flower. Thanks for adding it!
