Thanks Dick! These were shot on a small table with black cloth covering it. I'm going to shoot some in natural light real soon.

Agree with John. Wonder how they'd look--some of them--shot atop a piece of black plexiglass?

Nice Jim. #2 reminded me of a cave stalactite. I think Kenny has a good idea with the black plexi.

do you use a ringflash with these? I bought one, and it will only flash in auto-mode. I can not get that close with my tamron 90mm 2.8 1:1, although everyone says I should be able to. The kenko extension tube set was a waste of my money-no help at all

No Marsha I use the built-in camera flash on the D80... it's the only flash I have...I'm not much on flash photography and shoot in outdoor natural light most of the time. I have one tube (25 mm) that I use sometimes for a little more magnification, but use it more on my 75-300 and 80-200 to get a closer working distance. I don't work at 1:1 very often on the subjects I work with.... there's just no need for me to work at that magnification. What kind of subjects are you trying to shoot at 1:1 and failing? What I've heard that the 90 mm is an outstanding lens and a lot of folks own it and get excellent results.

Well, that's what I hear, so I guess it is just me, but when I try to get close like your pix, then I loose focus,so I back off and then I am too far away. I have tried in manual and auto. I do not own a tripod (yet), but some people say they don't use one either, so not sure if that is my issue or not. I do not like flash either, but bought the ringflash thinking it would let me go in closer. (didn't happen). I shoot with a rebel XSI. So what do ya think ? I just may be "macro challenged"..........

Good shots Jim. Great color and texture. If Spring doesn't hurry up, I'm going to start looking in the attic for stuff to shoot. I hate Winter.

I've used a tripod from day one in my nature photography so it's just part of what I do. I'm not steady enough to handhold anything. There are several folks here that use flash, I've never got the hang of it, and I like working in natural light. Don't get frustrated... it's not easy but can be in fact rewarding when you get the hang of it. But it takes a lot of practice and patience. Shooting this kind of subject (studio work) is very easy because I can put them where I want them and they aren't going to move. In the field it is a lot different...things I shoot seem to always be moving around or flying off. Hang in there and you'll get it...It took me a while too...I've been doing this kind of photography for over 15 years and went through the same things you are now...it's part of the learning process and there is a lot of trial and error in the beginning. A lot of folks try it and get frustrated and just quit... I have to confess it's not for everyone.

Thanks Tom! I do a lot of other nature photography in the winter, but as soon as spring gets here I'm back out looking for little flowers and bugs to shoot.

Marsha, I too use a tripod whenever possible. I will hand hold if I'm forced to or if I'm on the move, but I usually carry a tripod or at least a monopod. I actually leave the camera mounted and if I need to hand shoot something just go ahead and shoot it with the tri/monopod attached. Works for me. I started with a ringflash, but wasn't happy with the results so I went to a Twin Lite (expensive) and I am much happier with it.
You can use extension tubes with your macro lens to get a closer focus. I regularly use a short one with my Canon 300mm and get pretty fair results. My advise, the three p's. Practice, practice, and practice some more. Macro photography is very addicting. Just ask several on this topic.
Happy to answer any questions you might have.
