Garden fly lighting test - 04-25-2010, 09:39 PM

Too windy to do any flower shots in the garden so I thought I would try to improve my homemade macro lighting rig from last year. I was hoping to have the MT-24EX by now, but this rig will have to do for a while so I will do the best I can with it. The following shot is straight out the camera except for resizing for the web. Do you think this is acceptable lighting for the tiny critters?

The homemade lighting rig I am referring to is the one in this post from last year. Things that I changed with it is the camera mount so I could rotate the camera mount to vertical & keep the lights horizontal. I also added some diffusion to both lights using a small nylon fabric sock with a small about of Fibrofil (used for quilt padding). The light settings that seem to work the best is the left set at Ettl -2/3 & the right at manual 1/16 power.

Camera settings for this shot were ISO 200, f11, 1/200 sec. using 30D, Sigma 105mm & 21mm ext. tube.

Me, too, the lighting looks about right. No very blown highlights...these guys are super reflective.
