First find in the garden - 07-21-2010, 08:07 PM

Found this little critter a few days ago on a tomato cage in the garden. My first thought was Bee Fly, but after browsing through Bugguide.net I'm not sure about the id. It was about the size of a Bumblebee, maybe a little longer but not as big around. It only allowed me to get these 2 shots and I got extremely lucky to get both of them sharp.

30D, Sigma 105mm, homemade dual light flash, handheld, cropped horizontally only to get rid of some dead space.

I think it is a type of robber fly - I found a few in my yard last year (none so far this year) - http://www.digitalscapephotography.c...1%20(8x10).jpg

Thanks John, Billy & Therese. The evening I found this I was just out watering. I dropped the hose and frantically ran in to get the camera setup. My wife thought I had hurt myself and when I showed her the shots on the LCD she gave me one of those 'you're crazy' looks.

I see your wife is like mine, I went down to the pond a few minutes ago and saw a snake which I will post later, I showed the pics to her and she said, the dogs can not go with you anymore and she gave me one of those 'you're crazy' looks too.
