Every shot I post has at least one or more extension tube(s) involved. As Jim and others say, they allow whatever lens you're using to focus closer. IMO, the biggest drawback to tubes is the amount of light loss. More tubes, more light loss. There are forumulae out there to calculate light loss. I try to keep my extension to under 1/2 the focal length of the lens I'm using.

Looks like a green tree frog very common in most of Texas. They will fit in the palm of your hand easily....

The one I posted is a green tree frog...it was about 1 inch long...some are little longer but most of the ones I find are even smaller than an inch

I use them fairly often with my 70-200mmL and my 100mm macro. I think they work great. No glass (so no image degredation) but you do lose infinity focus. Be ready to use a tripod for 95% of the shots because they sure do cut down on light.
Here's one with my 70-200mm and 25 mm ext tube:

Great shot, Jason! I don't know why I never think to use them with anything other than the macro. I need to get them out more.

All of these were taken with Nikon D300, 50mm/1.8 w/ ext tube (although I didn't write down which tube)

I was using two tubes - for a total I think of 56 mm (20mm + 36 mm) for this one:

More from that session :

Erect Dayflower - Focus Stacked

Keep in mind these are tubes and as such there is not glass so they are only as good as the lens you attach them to!

Not Kenko but...

This was taken with 52mm Opteka tubes and a Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro.
