Talking Antlion* - 08-20-2011, 04:29 PM

Critique: NC:

These are a very rare treat! This one is younger than the last one I came across, and only the 2nd I have ever seen out in the wild. Quite excited when I saw it, as you can imagine.

Thanks for looking

*I was corrected on the species of this little bug: it is an antlion. Which is very similar to the owl fly. So, now I've seen just one owl fly, and one antlion.

Nice catch, Garret. I always blow out those beautiful eyes with the flash. Same with lacewings, too. Nice shots.

first time I have ever seen them also. I always thought an Ant Lion
was the bug that dug holes in the dirt and trapped ants.

The only things I know about antlions I learned from Simant.

Very cool shots, and I love the way his eyes reflected your light.

Love the eyes on the Antlion, I photographed one a few years ago and got that same "starburst" like look.
Great set, well done!

They are one in the same. The image above is the adult form. The ones in the ground are the larval form. And yes I had to look it up.
