Spiked Ferro-Fluid - 09-12-2011, 07:57 PM

Critique: NC:

This is a small dab of Ferro-Fluid under the influence of a magnetic field. Really cool stuff! The spiky puddle is about 1/2" inch in diameter.

The off camera flash made all the difference.

Canon 5D II; 180mm macro; f/8; 580 EX II.

Thank you all for the comments. Rather than go into a dissertation on the fluid, you can visit this link:

Ferrofluid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Basically this is an oily fluid that responds to magnets (magnetic fields) in interesting ways. It is very useful. For example, if you had a vessel or chamber that needed to be kept isolated, this material could be used as a magnetic clutch for a rotary feedthrough without breaching the wall of the vessel and creating a leak or some other issue; i.e. you can twist a shaft inside a chamber without making a hole in the wall.

I like it and agree with Dick, very innovative and well presented! did you have a look at it in b/w?, might give the fluid a real chrome touch?
