Rock Salt Crystals - 10-04-2011, 03:10 PM

Critique: CC:

These are taken with the S3is with a Rayox 250 & 2X TC and then backlit on a paper plate setting on a flashlight, food coloring left to dry.

The last 2 pics with shadows is just desk lamp ambient lighting spritzed with cooking oil,I like the shadows the best.

Thanks for looking.

I don't do a lot of macro so take this with grain of salt :)

Most of these seem out of focus, although 3 is definitely the best focus. Looks like you have some blurring at the edges, and I don't know if that's due to the lens that you're using or what.

I prefer the two with the ambient light, just because of how these were composed. I think the backlit photos would have worked better if the salt crystals were more tightly packed so that they filled the FOV more.

Not a fan of the strong shadows in the last two though. I think the shots would have worked better if they were lit with two light sources (or if you used a reflector) to minimize the shadows. Also not a fan of the foam as a background.

This is an interesting concept, and I'm looking forward to some more attempts at these.
