Black velvet. I've tried other stuff but nothing provides the deep, rich black that velvet does.

I don't have a preference yet but I have been using matt finish black formica.You can probably get a small piece at a cabinet shop for free

I'd be hesitant to use anything that would produce reflection. Especially, when using OCF. I might try it for some special reflective effects of the subject but not for the background.
