Metering Mode for 1:1 macro? - 08-01-2007, 03:22 PM

Hey gang,

Just starting using my 30D for macro (previously used XTi), and I've been using spot metering mostly. I'm not sure if I should use spot metering...any suggestions for 1:1 macro only, flash and no flash?

What do you prefer to use? Eval, Partial, Spot, or CWA?

Thanks,
Roy

Roy,

There are not preferred metering to use for macro. Choice of metering mode is depend on lightting condition, and not just only for macro but for all sort of photography.

You can use flash to lift the detail, fill the subject or background to get the job done. But avoid single flash as main light (personal preference) Or use more expensive macro ring flash. I prefer natural light with just bit of fill flash.

I use spot metering and just natural lighting but that's just my preference. Sometimes I will use a silver reflector to bounce a bit more light on the subject.

Okay thanks folks...I did some testing this evening...seems I like the CWA better than spot...of course like zero said...depends on the circumstances. Right now I've only taken macro in spot metering on my new 30D (about 30 macro shots) and compared to my XTi with my 100mm 2.8 I'm just not getting the exposure and focusing I was getting on the XTi so this has provoked me to keep asking questions and testing. I just started learning DSLR and macro about 3 months ago. I've been reading a lot on the web.

While we are on topic...what is your average stop, speed, and iso? I've been using flash with a stop of about 10, speed between 1/160 and 1/200, and ISO 400.

Thanks,
Roy
