Variegated Meadowhawk "face" - 03-31-2009, 03:45 PM

I'm culling some old files today and found this one that I thought was interesting... It's the dew covered face of a Variegated Meadowhawk dragonfly and a kind that I had not got before. Captured November last year and it was a cool morning in the prairie area of Brazos Bend State Park. I hope I can find some of them this year.

Wow, Jim, I've never photographed a dragonfly THAT close-marvelous details!

Hey James! There are a few DF that have eyes like these. I'm not sure what causes this but they change to different colors sometimes may be the light they are in at the time.

Hi Therese! This fellow was helpless because of the cold and dew and I really had my way with it! They usually fly when I use the 105, but this one was stuck with me for a while and nothing it could do about it.

Very nice Jim. It does pay to get out of bed early and get out and start taking photos. That is a great shot. Nice Job.

Thanks a lot Scott! I've always been a morning person and if the park opened at 5 am I'd probably be there... I love to hear the forest waking up a dawn!

Hey Kenny! When you make a trip down here we may get lucky and find one or three...I'm keepin' my eyes peeled for them now.

Thanks Jimmie! I get lucky once in a while and find one that's helpless and it's just like shooting in a studio with fresh air.

Thanks Jimmy! I've got one where it is wiping the dew off of its face and mouth I'll try to post it sometime in the future. Still processing them.

Great picture Jim. I am amazed at the sharp detail you are able to capture. That 105 is a great lens, but no better than the technique behind it.

Thanks Bill! I have loved the 105 since the day I bought it. Nikkor has this one perfect! I have an AF 24/2.8D and AF 80-200/2.8D that I use for landscapes that is just as sharp as the 105. They are my three favorite lenses to use. If my memory is right I used the Plamp on this shot with remote cable release and of course the tripod. Proper technique does help a little.
