thought I'd give this a shot cause it seems so many photogs seem to be musically inclined.

My 13 year old daughter has played drums the last four years - if it's percussion - she plays it.

Snare
Bass
Tri-toms
Jimbya

Anyway - she asked for a drumset three years ago but the drumcore teacher said - nope!

So her instructer said she's at the point where she's ready for one. He's prepping her to be the chapel band drummer and is thrilled that she is as good as she is.

Knowing nothing about drum sets - I hit a drumstore and got sticker shock.

So - if anyone has a drumset collecting dust - let me know. And if anyone has suggestions on what to look at/for - or other options - let me know!

What budget are you trying to stay in and I can give some advice. Some really decent kits out there that aren't too pricey. Good quality cymbals on the other hand can easily run you as much as the shells.

Okay - here's what I've got - the problem is that I have no idea what a 'good' set of drums is. The son of a friend has a Pearl set with bass drum, snare drum, three toms, high hat, and crash cymbal...

He is getting a new set - so he said he'd sell his for $75.00

Another said he has a yamaha custom set - wood - custom that he's going to get me pictures off and I need a price on.

A guy who sells drums out here has a complete set - I'm waiting to get the info on - but he was asking $900 for them.

My ideal budget is probably $3-400 max... But honestly - it's like a non- photographer saying they need to buy a lens and their budget is $3-400 because they don't know Jack $-/& about lenses. ;-)

Cant go wrong with a set of Pearl's.
My personal set was a Yamaha custom wood set. Too bad I dont have it any more... I really want to play again. Going to drop some green on a set of good Roland's tho.

Just an FYI: If she is in public school, what I am finding out with my kids going into teh Jr.High band programs, is that to be considered for the drumline in HS, that they are required to be able to play the keyboard (which translates onto bells/xylophone, etc.).

Good luck and have fun with it!

Thanks!

She's been drumming (private school) since fourth grade. She was the only sixth grader in advanced band and is the youngest to be asked to be part of the chapel band ( think I'm kinda proud of her? :-)

The guy that is asking $900 for his - this is what it is/ what it comes with:

vintage Ludwig
22x16 kick
13x9 tom
14x6.5 snare
16x16 floor tom
2 snare stands
2 cymbal stands
1 hihat stand
1 kick pedal
1 ride cymbal
1 pair hihats
1 crash

you will still need to buy a seat but the rest is covered!

He teaches at the school - but there are tons of parents that won't even blink at that price. I'm not one of them. ;-)

Based on that, I would say to check out what comes with the Pearl set.

The Ludwig sounds overprived for what he is offereing, at a quick glance and without being able to validate the year, condition and model # of the set. I would pass on that a keep hunting, as with the spare stands, it sould more like he is trying to unload excess hardware (much like our gear section here) and pass it off as a great deal or free gift with purchase.

When I sold my Yamaha custom set, I sold the following for 1200 (split up into 2x 600 sets).
Kick : 22" and 24"
Mounted Toms : 8", 10", 12", 14"
Floor Toms : 14", 2x 16", 18"
Snare : 12x6" wedge, 13x3.6" maple
Hats and Cymbals : All Zildjian, no cracks, too numerous to list, but enough to provide a set of hats and cymbals 3ea per kit with stands.
Sold the China separately.
Sold my 2 racks of rotos and rack of tubes separately.

Deals are out there to be had, you just have to be willing to look.

If you buys used, take a drum key with you and check for:
- loose lugs
- stripped lugs
- bent/warped rims
- stripped/ben/warped/loose mounts legs
- snares (condition of them, straight, bent, etc).
- check the heads that are on there (dented, no dents)
- cymbals (check for stick dents) - note that some have intentions/dimples in there from the factory as part of the design. Dents from impacts is another animal altogether
- cymbals (check for cracks) - you should be able to see/hear those easily.

Unless its a timing thing, watch CL or the local ads over the next 2-3 mo. Sometimes a lot of sr's that are now graduating are not headed back into band in college and will need the cash they have in their sets... If you feel comfortable buying used, you can optionally check out pawn shops, but i dont recommend that.

That sounds like a good price on the Perl set. Would leave you some money to replace with some better cymbals if you needed to.
Especially good if you get a chance to look them over really good.
