I want to get a cheap .22 for plinking at the range and something my lady can handle easily. Partial to 1911s, but post up whatever you have. Extra magazines are wonderful.

Nathan....you might want to pick-up a Sig P-238 very nice easy to use gun...not big but delivers a nice punch...easy to do a double tap with...and feels like a mini-1911....

I know Academy had some with night sites and extra capacity clips for about $460.00....

Good Luck...

I have a Ruger MkII that I have worn out over the last 24 years I've owned it. Rugged, reliable, abusable, easy to handle, and will take plain old ammo you can burn through a brick at a time. In my younger days I would go through a brick every two weeks during the summer and about half that after school the rest of the year. (I had a range at the house) It's like a good sewing machine and just keeps on going. It's the only gun I've ever shot the rifling out of and enjoyed every minute of it.

Thanks for the suggestions, fellas. I'm starting to lean towards the Ruger Mark III or Browning Buckmark now.

Nate - if you're in town, give me a call if you want to give the ruger a run at the range.

What would you all think about a KelTek 380 P-3At for my wife (petite, 5')? I got a .40 and 9mm Springfield XDs, but they are a little large for her. The P-3at was recommended and just curious what you all think versus what you all are recommending here. Anything else I should consider for her as a carry handgun?

Thanks!

I would stay away from the P3AT. They are decent guns but just seem like cheap junk to me. If you want to go that route, take a look at the Ruger LCP, pretty much a clone but with good manufacturing. Also be sure she can hold on to it. Little guns even in medium calibers can bite some people if they aren't holding on to it.

Maybe take a look at the Bersa 380. Cheap gun, but in the time I managed a gun store I never heard of a single problem. Supposed to be pretty reliable.

To the OP: Ruger does make fantastic little 22's and would be a great choice for a plinking gun. Personally, I like my Sig Mosquito better. Better resembles larger caliber pistols as far as size and overall profile. A much better choice for training to use more standard pistols. Mine has been perfectly reliable, even with the remington golden bricks. It's a real blast with a silencer too.

I had a .380 semi auto as a carry pistol, but when I went to qualify for my CHL, everyone at the range including the instructor told me it was not really enough for self defense unless I was really, really close and really, really good. Now I have a Glock .40. It's not that much bigger or heavier than the .380. I don't want to get really, really close and I don't spend enough time at the range to be really, really good. I get every shot on the target when I qualify for the CHL, but not all in the 3 point area, so I feel more comfortable with the .40.

I carry a .45 (1911) but have also carried a 9mm, .380, and .40 ... of all of them I like the 45 the best but don't mind the .40. Regardless of the bullet size if you know how to use it and place your shots where it matters you're gonna stop someone.

I would not put an automatic pistol in any womans hands for self defense...the fact is that all automatics jam...revolvers never do.

I would also agree with this statement and like to add that you consider something with an internal hammer. Internal hammers cannot get jammed when you need to shoot thru a purse or pocket. Like the S&W 442 or 640 for example.

Just .02 ... the gun is only 1/2 the equation. One also has to consider the ammo loaded in the gun.

In my opinion, when it comes to home defense one should consider Glaser Safety Slugs. Its like shot-gun bug shot, but for your pistol.

Just putting the info out there for consideration. I'm not affiliated in any way.

Agree! I use the Corbon JHPs for self defense, but I'll look into the Safety Slugs. I do use less expensive ammo at the range and just shoot a few of the Corbons.
