About Me
Hello everyone. My name is Michael... and I'm a sports photographer (crowd says, "Hi Michael"). I am a native Texas living in Austin. Tempest Photo Group is my company where I, and occasionally others, capture sports photos, produce graphic design projects and design websites. I have been a photographer for 18 years, a graphic designer for 13 (mostly offset printing and agency), and have been doing web design for three years.
The name Tempest comes from my love of lightning / storms and Shakespeare's "The Tempest", a story about a man who can control the weather. I am Austin-based, but am available for travel around the state or around the world.
Favorite Aspect of Photography
I would like to share a poem from me, then I will explain...
"When I photograph a game, I always want to have that feeling of being a little kid when walking in to a sporting event... the awe.. the crowd.. the noise... the feel of the grass, of the parque floor, the feeling of them watching me... while I am watching the game through my lens.
The perfection of creativity in capturing a moment in time, a fleeting thousandth of a second... the physics involved between athlete & ball, camera & lens, and light reflecting off every surface at 186,00 miles a second, all for my eyes to see. If I ever lose that feeling, please come take my camera away... for I will be dead and won't need it anymore."
- Michael Steele (2009)
It's that feeling you get when you are an amateur or semi-pro and you are all excited about a new challenge. I always go in to an event with that feeling. It's excitement, nervousness, and adrenaline, but never fear. We all know what we are capable of and always want to push the envelope of just how far we can go. When I get home,or at the event, and start processing photos, I want to sit there staring at my laptop saying, "Damn, that's <bleeping> incredible!" I always want to go further, push the envelope.
It's one thing to take a photo of a beautiful place or an event, it's another to capture a spectacular photo from an amazing event from a completely different angle. Don't sit with the other photographers in the pit, try something different. GO ahead and get the assignment shot, but then expand and go past the assignment and get something even more amazing. Do you think SI photogs just sit there and get the same shots as everyone... very seldom.
