Did the tree die of natural causes or was it destroyed by visitors to the site?

It's definitely not an easy site to locate. A ton of sites will show pics but no exact location info.. We knew more less where to park and through using google earth, maps and the photos they shot of the tree I found a pretty ballpark coordinate. It was a pretty good walk off of the highway. Not bad tho

Joshua Tree National Park or Monument (?-not sure officially which it is) is a genually wonderful place. Fragile. Treated with respect. Enjoyed but not harmed.
I won't rule out that the tree may have been "loved to death."

Abel, I'm glad you found what is left of the tree. There are much more photogenic locations in the area.

We had a great time getting out to death valley and hunting around looking for the tree... it was maybe about 1/4 to 3/8 of a mile off of the main highway.

I had plugged in what I thought was close coordinates into my portable gps and walked up right to it... very neat to see all of the things left behind by other U2 fans and such...
