Will,

To me the waterthrush looks like a northern mainly due to the fine streaking on the breast. The beak looks fairly large which would suggest LA but I think it is still in the size range for northern. The supercillium is sort of a tricky field-mark as the throat spotting (which obviously isn’t visible in this photo). The supercillium in your bird looks rather buffy to me instead of the bright white normally expected in LA and the throat looks like it may be spotted though it could just be the lighting… Anyway neither of those are really solid field-marks. The time of year favors northern as the LA’s should have moved through by the second week in September and now should be rare to very rare. This obviously doesn’t mean that you can’t find a LA Waterthrush now but your chances are much better at finding a Northern Waterthrush.

That’s really neat that you saw the YHBB. It is also interesting that you saw the Ani after it being gone for so long. I wonder if it is even the same bird.

Greg

There was a birder there who was calling someone throughout the morning about what was seen, seemed to be knowledgable, he thought there was more than one by the calls! So who knows.
