And always have perfect depth of field and never center the subject in the frame. But I liked the colors on this little Buckeye butterfly and figured I'd post it at any rate. I shot this my last trip to Brazos Bend on the prairie wildflower trail. I used D80, Nikkor AF 105/2.8D on a tripod. Exif is in the photo.

Thanks Lisa. This is my favorite butterfly now. I didn't know how colorful they were until I saw one in person for a few minutes...like seeing a rainbow for the first time.

Thanks Therese. I'd like to spend more time with it but as soon as I got going real good it took off into the wild blue yonder! I hope I get to see another one again.

Thanks Lonnie. I found this guy right beside the trail all covered with dew... But when it got ready to go it didn't hang around for very long. I got luck to get a few photos.

Jim, i'm not macro guru but i don't think everything has to be dictated by the rule or enough DOF. Be creative and ditch the rule! The most important thing is good use of DOF, also I don't see anything wrong with centering this image. It's nearly symmetrical, i would say good job leveling the image.

If you were to step down, it would reveal the much-busy background that likely to spoil the overall smooth backdrop, though i hate the dark side on the right. The color and pattern are vibrant, accurate and your flier appeared in the air from the angle, very pleasing image.

This is a super image, Jim!

I prefer think of the "rules" as guidelines, which can be tossed away depending on the subject matter and creativity of the photographer.

Very very nice Jim. Love the butterfly colors against the green background. Is this in flight or was sitting on something that you masterly hid?
