Taking Cover - 10-11-2009, 11:25 AM

Here's another image from yesterday at Mercer Arboretum. I spent about an hour trying to photograph this Bumblebee which had taken cover from the previous night's rains. I had to lower the tripod all the way and point upward since the little darling was underneath the Purple Cone flower. Thanks for taking a look. Oh yeah, I tried to tone down the pop up flash this time

Well done, Therese. Sharp details of the bee's "fur". Flash lighting looks good.

Therese that looks great but it gives me the heebie-jeebies just thinking about it. I'm allergic to bee/wasp stings and there's no way I could capture that image.

This shot almost makes you feel sorry for the bee. Glad I'm not one of them hee hee.
Nice, Therese.

Thanks John-with the help of you all I learned how to decrease the amount of flash on my pop up flash. I will be glad when I can photograph in natural lighting again soon.

That bee wasn't going anywhere for awhile with all that rain water on it, but I might think differently if I were allergic to stings.

LOL, Leon! No way I'd photograph one of these Bumblebees that close on a sunny day.

That's one waterlogged bee! Great job on lighting him up under the flower - looks very natural. I like the title.

I read somewhere that male bumblebees don't sting, just the females. Doesn't do me any good. I can't tell the difference. Even if I could, by the time I got close enoughto tell, it would be too late if it was a female.

Patti

Waterlogged alright, LOL! The lighting has been quite a challenge the past two Saturdays, Patti.

I ain't looking down there trying to figure out who the male or female is .

Great detail on the very soggy bee Therese and as usual a perfect background. The lighting on the bee looks great but to me the stem & petals don't look quite right. It may be a white balance issue I'm seeing from the combination of the flash & ambient light. At the long exposure time you were still getting a lot of ambient light especially from the left side.

Just my amateur observations.

Hmmmm...I don't know, Dan...I do know I work better with natural lighting. Thanks for your observations!

Exposure looks fine to me...I'd like to see a little more room at the top LH corner so the foot wasn't so close to the edge... a beautiful subject!

Was that a critique...? I think it's the first one I've ever done in my whole life. You don't think the little toes are too close to the edge of the frame.

LOL, Jim! Yes I think the little "toes" are too close to the edge. There was some reason while I was composing that I didn't want more on the left of the "toes". I guess I'm old-can't remember at the moment why.
