Woops Wrong Flower - 10-29-2009, 07:41 AM

I was just setting up to take a photo of a little prarrie flower with a spider when a Skipper landed. I snapped the picture, the spider jumped and missed as the butterfly flew away. I was thinking if that spider had caught the Skipper would he have gone for a little unexpected air time?

Gerald,

Good luck and timing on that shot! Reminds me of a few days ago: I was in macro mode on my 35-135 shooting some Green Lynx spiderlings that had just hatched out when a Monarch landed on the roses right by me! I managed to get out of macro mode and focused on him enough to get a shot on it. I might post it soon. Timing is quite a bit when doing stuff like this, isn't it just?!

Thanks for sharing!
Sam

Thanks Sam, I thought this post went unnoticed. It seems that quite often it's the unexpected things that mean the most after an outing is through (see my post "Eaten Alive"). Yesterday I was trying to get a close photo of a Goatweed Leafwing butterfly when it took off and landed in back of me right at my feet. I couldn't move my feet so I had to slowly twist around and shoot down. It was painful but worth it.

Thanks for the id and the comments Therese. I think I've seen these in different shades of white depending on the color of the flower they are on. Do you know if they can change their color?

Gerald and Therese,

I don't think it's a Green Lynx spider. Here's one for comparison:

Granted, this one is a pregnant female about to lay eggs (which I got later on). But still, you can see the shape is very different, as well as coloration and general body appearance. Green Lynx spiders have a lot of hairs/spikes on their legs. As another comparison shot, take a look at this one:

Unfortunately, you don't have a great angle on him in this shot, but I think it's the same species. I'm not sure what it's called, but I call it a crab spider. Might have to look it up sometime, though...

Nice shot, as I said before!
Sam

Thanks Sam, I agree. I don't think this little spider is a Green Lynx either given its size and shape. I looked up some crab spiders and they have a definate crab-like appearance and are usually white. I don't know if that quite fits either. Anyone out there have a good ID?
