GBH trying to eat a Ruddy Duck (Graphic) - 12-22-2009, 04:14 PM

I've seen Great Blue Heron's eat a wide assortment of critters, but never before have I seen one attempt to eat a full-grown Ruddy Duck. This GBH must have spent close to an hour trying to swallow this female Ruddy with no luck. It finally gave up and flew to the opposite shore in shame. The Ruddy did not survive the encounter but I'm sure some vultures or coyotes will put it to good use. Taken in Corpus Christi at Hans Suter park on Oso Bay.

Amazing behavioral images!
I've seen GBHs eating dragonflies and to think it would try to consume a Ruddy Duck...
