First trip to Baytown Nature Center... - 01-24-2010, 09:37 PM

Well, the Eagles didn't pan out, perhaps due to the high winds. We only got a look from 200+ yards on the golf course...

So, we went over to Baytown Nature Center instead for our first visit. Enjoyed it quite a bit, we'll be back for more.

The Cormorants were quick as always...

The Brown Pelicans didn't mind the gusts...

Got a few Reddish Egret shots too.

The Blackbirds had nobody on their turf....

And our old friends the Great Egrets were out and about.

The sky was perfectly clear...

The San Jacinto Monument stood strong against the sunset....

Of course, you have to shoot the bridge on the way out too...

Worth the trip for sure.

Very nice series Bruce. I like the evening light on the cormorants and pelicans.

Nice series of shots Bruce. You could improve them with a little noise reduction. That's one of the better shots of the bridge I've seen. A little noise reduction would give it more impact too.

Same here. Surprised it took this long. Did you guys get any action with the Eagles later on?

Thanks. I just used Camera Raw and Elements 8 for these. This one was intentionally underexposed originally to get a silhouette effect, so it was going to be noisy bringing it back up. I'll work on some other versions and see how I do.

You're an early morning guy, I'm a late afternoon/sunset shooter... Either way, you gotta love that warm, low angle light. We saw a ton of Roseates too, but we were eating lunch at the time. Thanks.

For sure. Glad we checked it out. Saw a nice Red-tailed Hawk that got away, too. The lady at the gate said that there was a Bald Eagle out there today around 1pm....

Very Nice shots! Sunday was my first trip to Baytown Nature Park also. Went in the morning, got a few good shots of the spoonbills but not as nice as yours. There is reported of three Bald Eagles in that park, mostly seen at Woosters Point and also at the Crystal Bay Butterfly Garden. I did not see them on this trip. Maps are available at the entrance gate. I doubt this location will be infested with overlookers, it does require some walking.

These are likely the same eagles that are nesting nearby. From the nest to the BNC is about 6.5 miles, straight shot. It's hit or miss at the nature center for the eagles, but they seem to show up there every now and then. But there's always something to shoot there, and as you state there's quite a bit of area to walk.
