First trip to Scoby Lake (SBNWR Hudson Woods Unit) - 01-27-2010, 09:30 PM

Just west of Angleton off FM 521 in Baileys Prairie, there's a relatively unknown part of the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge at Scoby Lake. For those who frequent BBSP, it's not too much farther from Houston. I had the run of the place today. The highlight was the Osprey that made several passes for me. I also saw 3 types of Woodpecker, Eastern Phoebes, Cardinals, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, and Anhingas to name a few. Worth a vist to be sure.

Saving the best for last, here's a bird I've never seen or heard of in my life!

I was quite shocked to find the elusive "Geo-Cache Dove" on the edge of the path back to the car.... The hole in the chest holds a pill bottle with a log for Geo-Cachers to sign once they locate it. Should I call it in to Cornell?

That's the closest pass of the Osprey, thanks. It was a long range, so-so light operation, but very cool just the same. Damn, I'd love a 500mm or 600mm F4 (and a porter... ). Tons of small birds there now, it must be great a bit later in the season.

Thanks, Dennis. If was late afternoon, but pretty cloudy at times. I've been dying to check this place out, as it is just a few miles further than BBSP for me and I drive by it to get to Quintana or San Bernard. When I signed the log, I was first to do so since Sunday! It's easy to miss the turn on Sally Lake Road. If you get to HWY 35, you just missed it. This would be easy for Sandy to get to commuting to San Bernard as well.

Great BIF shots Bruce. Love the Osprey when they cooperate.
