Black duck?

This is a discussion on Black duck? within the Nature and Wildlife forums, part of the Showcase category; Anybody know what type of duck this is? There were tons of them in Lake Murray today here in Ardmore. ...

Anybody know what type of duck this is? There were tons of them in Lake Murray today here in Ardmore. They are solid black except for their beak, and their eyes looked orange. Even their feet were black. So pretty!

That is a coot or as we always called them,"Mud Hens". At least, I think that's what it is.

From your photo and excellent description, this has to be an American Coot.

Coots are not actually ducks, but they do look like ducks.

It is an American Coot. They winter in the southwest and west coast.

The American Coot is in the "Rail" family,Charrie.Like Jim said,there are a gazillion of them @ Brazos Bend right now.
