Jim,

That is, as usual for you, a great series of images.

The Egret is Great, that's true.

The siren is not so great however because Greater Siren (Siren lacertina) doesn't occur in Texas - it only occurs in the SE US.
That is a Western Lesser Siren (Siren intermedia). It is a big "Lesser" Siren to be sure! Sorry to ruin your catchy title.

A Greater Siren can be twice that size (I once captured one that weighed 4 pounds and was almost 3 feet long).

In case anyone cares, they are called Sirens because when captured they can let out a "squeak" that someone likened to a "siren song" of mythology. That was creative license taken to the extreme since it is more of a grunt than a song. I'll bet the siren in your picture was singing up a storm!

Chris

Thanks Chris you are the man!! I can change the title and it don't hurt my feeling's at all...When I first posted it I just had a eel as the ID. I'd never seen one in person. Thanks a ton for the information. I didn't hear any sounds from the poor thing, heck all I could hear was my heart pounding in my ears I was so excited. Bird shootin' makes me sooo nervous.
