Enzo the Bernese Mountain Dog - 03-06-2010, 09:50 PM

Today I enlisted the aid of my wife to help me take some pictures of our 7 year old Bernese Mountain Dog. I think I'll try again soon because his head should have been looking more towards the camera instead of up at mommy who was holding the treat. Still, I'm somewhat happy with the shot. And yeah, I could have cleaned up the drool from his mouth but I figure it's more like him to have it there.

Nice image, but IMHO it is cropped too tight. There needs to be a little more room around the dog.

I think the pose is fine as it is...I'd add more space to the LH side of the frame so all the tail was showing...beautiful dog!!

Enzo looks great! I agree with a little breathing room but the lighting, colors and detail are just right.

Thanks for all the comments. Don, Jim, Therese and Roy, I agree with ya'll that getting all the tail and adding a little more room around would be good. It's a little harder than it seems though - imagine trying to take a picture of a model in a 4 square foot area that isn't blocked by a light stand, reflector, furniture, etc. Add to that the fact the model doesn't listen to direction and constantly wanders around only to assume a pose for 1/2 a second and you get the idea. :) I will work on getting a better picture with better framing and I'll post the results.

One thing this does is make me want some studio lights and real seamless paper or muslin background with a real background stand. It's just hard for me to justify the money for the couple of shots a year I take. After all, I can just work a little harder and still get a good shot with what I have.

Definately! And believe me, I totally understand what you are dealing with.
I don't think you need more stuff to make a very good shot just a little better.

Billy, thanks. As for bring your lab over you welcome to but 1) my other dog has a problem with dogs he doesn't know and 2) I've seen your photos - you can do at least as good a job.
