Harris Hawks at the Martin Refuge - 03-13-2010, 06:58 PM

The female Harris Hawk will sometimes follow my truck as I drive to the raptor blind or will arrive soon after I get there. She will wait on top of the sange while I unload equipment and put out food. She will come in and start feeding even before I can get my truck turned around and get it parked. The juvenilles are bullies. They like to wait till a Caracara flies off with a scrap then chase it till it drops the meat so they can steal it. I feed only twice a week sometimes only once if the weather is bad. It has taken almost 2 yrs. to get the Harris Hawks to come to the raptor blind.

Your dedication to these hawks ranks number one on good people. I really enjoy the story on these raptors.

Patty, great pictures and your patience is well rewarded with these pictures. Is that catchlight from a better beamer?

At first I wsa happy to have a Caracara show up. Now there have been as many as 5 Harris hawks come to feed. Getting to see the birds behavior and of course there are the suprise visitors make the wait worth it. A Coopers Hawk came in one time and took a chicken quarter. A biologist from the King Ranch did not believe that happened till he saw the picture. Other hawks have shown up along with Roadrunner, Coyote and Rattlesnake. I am glad you enjoy the pictures. Thank you.

Patty, I do to but a friend of mine (Allen who posts here) got a better beamer and I am thinking about getting one. I expect Doug to be posting some of these Harris Hawks after his visit to Martin Refuge this year
