My first visit to BBSP - 03-15-2010, 08:00 PM

I have never seen such a concentration of animal life in one place. I was completely overwhelmed by the sights and sounds of the park. I have been canoeing on Armand Bayou so many times that I could go blindfolded and still find my way back. In comparison to Armand the animals at BBSP almost seem like pets. They are much more approachable and are not as skittish as the animals at Armand. I was utterly stunned by the sounds when I got out of the car for the first time. I just was not ready for the experience. I'm not sure the shutter ever closed on my camera. Double WOW. Hope you'll enjoy some of the shots.

LOL now you see what we are talking about! Glad you made it out there! It still gives me goose bumps everytime I go even after 17 years. The sounds are like the jungle. The only thing missing are monkeys. Then again...
So I take it I'll see you out there soon again. When did you go?
I like the female red-winged black bird you got!

Enjoy the comfortable, bug-free weather now. It can be downright evil out there in August. Glad you enjoyed it. I was there yesterday, and saw my first Yellow-crowned Night Herons of the season.

I saw one too! He was pretty far off though, I've been seeing some black crowned night herons also.

Sandy,

I went on Saturday morning and got there just after sunrise. You are very right about it sounding like a jungle. Amazing. I'm not much on bird IDs. I assume the bird with the dark gray stripes is the female red-wing. I'll be back soon.

Awww, I wish I could have been there with you. I love seeing people's first reaction to BBSP! I still remember my first visit, like a kid in a candy store. Nice shots.

Jerome you got some fabulous photos too! I think BBSP is one of the finest parks in this area to do all kinds of nature photography. It's the only place I go all year as long as it's not raining or too cold to get out. Early spring and fall are the most comfortable times to visit, but I actually prefer the summer months most. The humidity and biting bugs keep most people away but I don't mind that because the subjects I shoot flourish that time of the year and every outing is usually successful for me. I've been going out there almost every week since 1984 and still look forward to each trip because I never know what the day is going to be like or what I'll end up getting.

Thanks Therese, I've always wanted a cardinal shot and I guess that was a keeper.

Ron, I appreciate the compliment and I'm ready whenever you're ready for a return engagement. I'm looking forward to returning to the open zoo.

Hey Sid, you're spot on about the candy and I'm a candy junkie. I'll be back to steel some more shots.

I appreciate the compliments Jim. I've definitely got my can of Off when the going gets tough. I guess we could put a macro shot on those little blood suckers, but I think I'll stick to the larger sized creatures.

Thank you Jimmie.

I have a question about the black Ibis ??? Is that what it is and are their feathers always that reflective. I thought they were just stunning, but not very approachable. I had one other shot and would appreciate an I.D. Thanks.

Beautiful shots. I think your ibis is a glossy ibis.

Thanks for the info on the ibis and thanks for the compliment. I didn't realize the colors in the feathers until I started looking at the photos at home. First time I had ever seen one. I must admit that I was kind of oblivious to birds until just recently. Thanks again.
