Ron, I've been there and enjoyed it greatly. You can visit Martin Refuge in Edinburg, Texas and learn about Martin Refuge, it is first and foremost a conservation effort - to help landowners pay for keeping all those amazing animals for us to photograph. There are several other properties in the general area to visit if you go down there Lens and Land: Properties

I would also recommend visiting the Port of Mansfield if you have time, it is a small town and big deer are walking around everywhere and standing in people's yards.

Patti, what is the best season to visit as far as seeing critters.

Spring and summer, as the weather heats up more animals come to the water. Many of the photographers who photographed in the Valley Land Fund photo contest said they got most of their winning pictures in June.
