Wichita Mountain Refuge - 04-26-2010, 08:58 PM

Spent the weekend up in Oklahoma, the wind was a killer but still managed to see some great things and capture some of them. The Coyotes and Elk actually had a strong showing this visit. Some of these are cropped, mostly the Elk and Coyotes are.

The watcher being watched.

Laurie, Looks like you had a great trip. The coyote would have made it for me. What an awesome sight. Love that last shot! What is it?

What is the place like? Lots of hiking? Are there many roads to drive to see wildlife?

Patti, this a great place to hike or drive around to see wildlife. While I was there this time the wind blew very hard. But most of the time you can see tons of birds. In fact the Oklahoma Audubon Council recently recognized the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge as an Important Bird Area (IBA) to Oklahoma. Animals include, Bison, Longhorn, Prairie dogs, Collard Lizards, and Deer. I saw almost 10 coyotes while there and watching them go by the Elk and hunting the prairie dogs was the best. It's near Lawton OK, I stayed in Medicine Park a very small cobble stone village just outside of the refuge. They have cabins there for rent, it may cost a bit more then staying at a hotel in Lawton but I think it makes up for it in being very close to the refuge which is great at sunrise and is quiet, a nice get away from the city and all it brings.

Thanks everyone for the comments and for taking the time to view the photos.

Hi Pattii,

This is a great place to explore especially on foot. I have posted a photo of a map i made up with some nice hikes. I offer these to people all the time, especially the troops at Sheppard AFB. Never a charge. If you would like for me to send you a bigger file just ask.

thanks
