Missed opportunity - 06-12-2010, 06:33 AM

A couple of evenings ago it was too windy to try any natural light work in the garden, so I had my dual light flash setup mounted chasing bugs in the garden. The bugs weren't cooperating either and while waiting for a crab spider to come out of hiding, I turned & snapped one quick shot of one of my Day lilies. In the LCD, the color didn't look very impressive so I just gave up deciding it was just not the right time to try to shoot anything. I just now downloaded that shot and now I wish I had spent some more time with the Lily. This could have been a nice shot if I had spent some more time with it, but unfortunately I think this will be the last bloom of this color that I get for a while.

Do you have Photoshop Dan? You can probably get a little more out of it with a few Photoshop tweaks

This is the 2 minute wham bam thank you ma'am treatment. If you have Photoshop I'll post the methodology. This version is a little too crunchy for my taste. Probably due to JPG artifacts and the sharpening method my action uses. It's tuned up for large TIF files. The colors aren't as good with the pinks but that is due to the fast adjustments.

Very nice Dan. My day lilies are just starting to bloom (and I have been busy on other projects, so I have yet to shoot many of them).

I love the bottom portion of your image, Dan!
Yeah Day Lily photography can be quite challenging.

Dan, I couldn't resist playing around. I think the photo is fine just as it is - just needs a bit of vibrance boosting in the orange color and a touch of sharpening. What a beautiful flower!

Thank you Patti but there is a lot of room for improvement

I can't shoot with my glasses and I didn't have them with me when I took this shot so I'm going to have to blame my failing eyesight on not seeing the LCD preview correctly.

Thanks for taking the time Michael. I use Lightroom for 99% of what editing I do, which isn't much, and I have Photoshop Elements that works fine for any other small edits I might do.

The main thing that bothers me about my shot is the front stamens OOF and the composition could have been better if I had taken some more time with it.

Thanks John. This day lily and another that I have posted here recently have been blooming for about 2 weeks and are almost done. I have a few more that are almost ready to start but I forget what color there are.

Thank you Therese. In all honesty, it is some of your past lily shots that I was hoping to be able to duplicate myself. Just haven't gotten there yet.

Thanks again Patti. The pink & yellow of the real thing is really quite nice, I just didn't capture it right.
