So, there I was...
Sitting under a tree in my yard taking some flower photos, hearing a strange sound. I look up... and almost poop my pants! Needless to say I snapped a couple and walked away very slowly. They all flew off a couple hours later.

Great shot under the circumstances - I think if I took it there would have been appreciably more camera shake!!!! | | | |

Nice capture Mike...agree with Jim...they were looking for a new home...several years ago I was standing in my driveway one afternoon and I hear this loud buzzing noise...I look up and see this mass of swarming bees flying around...unfortunately for my next door neighbor, she had not shut the damper on her fireplace and the queen bee found its way down through the fireplace and into her den...all the other bees followed and she ended up with a ball mass of bees like in your picture on a plant sitting in her den window. She had to get a bee keeper come and remove the plant with all the bees from her den...

Thanks. I initially called an exterminator and they have me the Bee 101 lesson. Pretty neat stuff. Just glad they moved on.

Texas can exist without the United States, but the United States, cannot, except at great peril, exist without Texas. Sam Houston.

They are honey bees. I was told that they will travel for miles when looking for a new place to build a hive. When travelling, the queen will give out a signal to land and she will decide if she likes the place. She is under all that mass of bees. While she is deciding, the bees are not overly aggressive. If she decides to stay, she will give out a signal and assign duties. Some will start building and others will become defensive and aggressive. They usually move within 48 hours if she decides it's not the spot. Also, they usally don't build in trees. They look for covered more secure areas that can support a honeycomb. There's your Bee 101 for the day!
