Urban Wildlife - San Antonio Riverwalk (Large Images) - 07-10-2010, 12:19 PM

We recently spent a few days in San Antonio. I took my D300, a couple of lenses, and a tripod. While the family slept in the early morning, I roamed the River Walk area looking for shots in the early light. I was surprised to find a fair number of creatures moving about and of course enjoyed the flora.

Great shots! #2 and the last are my favorite, but also like the hummingbird one. Makes me want to get out more and get some shots of some animals!

All were shot with a 70-300 VR - a real sleeper lens if you ask me...

Thanks for all the comments - I lurk here at TPF a lot, but not a very vocal guy, I guess.

Interesting series. Was the frog really sitting on the lily pad like that?

The hummingbird is interesting. Not only is it a great shot, but it isn't one of the normal Central TX hummingbirds. It appears to be one of the western Selasphorus hummers (Rufous, Broad-tailed, Allens, etc.). They migrate through here sparingly in the autumn and yours must just be a little ahead of schedule. Looks most like a juv Broad-tailed Hummer if I had to guess.

Thanks...

Yes, the frog was on the pad - I was shooting a lily when he jumped up onto the pad. I wish my PP skills were good enough to be that convincing...
