Houston Zoo - 07-25-2010, 05:24 PM

I was inspired by the post about the San Antonio Zoo and had to throw these on from the Houston Zoo. I couldn't narrow down to 2 pics though. Sorry if it is too many. This is my first post on the forum, so I welcome any C&C on these photos. I've seen some great work on here.

Allen, Welcome to TPF! You got some very nice shots. #7 is hilarious! Good catch. I enjoyed seeing the interaction on the last one. I also like how you avoided the zoo look (bars, cages, etc) in a lot of the shots. Sometimes it just can't be avoided, but you did when possible.

The first couple seem a bit soft. My guess is camera shake or the animal moved some since the first one was at 1/50th with a 200mm lens - pretty slow. #7 was shot at 1/640th and it was very sharp.

Don't be afraid to bump the ISO up a little to get a shutter speed that you can hand hold and that will stop the action of the animals.

Great job! Look forward to seeing more of your shots.

Regards,
Patti

Yes, the first time I shot at the zoo was at the Photography Day when Abel was the guest speaker. That morning, we were allowed into the zoo 2 hours before everyone else. The second time, I went right when it opened. There were several groups of 5 year olds taking the tour, but luckily I'm 6'3" and can shoot over them....hahaha

Thanks for the feedback! Hand shake is always my nemesis. That and shooting birds through the fencing. :)

Congrats on your first post...very nice series from the zoo...really like your captures on #5 and #7...on #5 you might try doing a cropping on just the duck...kinda neat with the duck resting its bill on side of the lake...keep the post coming...
