Thanks! I wish I would have had a macro lens though! So many cool little things I could have gotten great shots of.

That longhorn looks great! You did a fine job on the dragonflies too. Of course the Robberfly is my favorite! I'm guessing you were using a zoom lens to shoot these... I use my 75-300 with a 20 mm Kenko extension tube to shoot dragonflies and other shy critters and it works pretty well for me. Lot's of bug shooters use a long zoom and tubes instead of a macro lens to get more working distance on their subjects...might be something to check into before you get a macro lens....it's a lot cheaper.

Thanks Jim and Ron. Jim, yes I was using my 55-250mm IS zoom. I'm wanting to get the 70-200mm and the 2x extension tube. It will probably be a few months before I can afford it though.

You may have mistaken a extension tube for a telecovertor...a tube has no glass and lets you focus closer to the subject and a set of them are around $170.00.

Actually I was wanting an extension tube to get more reach, but now that you mention it a teleconverter would be nice too.

Tubes will give you a closer focusing distance and you will lose the ability to focus to infinity so they are used mainly for more minimum focus distance. My 20 mm tubes lets me get about 4 feet from a subject at 300 mm instead of 5 feet. The dragonflies I posted in the macro forum were used with the 75-300 and tube.

Closer focusing distance definitely would have helped especially with the Robberfly. I found myself getting in position just to have to hop or take a step back to get it to focus. It's also why I could get a tighter shot with him.

Great set of pictures, I like the last one best but all are super. I used to use a magnifying glass in front of my lens before I got a macro.

I used to use a magnifying glass and I bought a lens off ebay that had fungus in it ( discovered after buying) so I took it apart and I use the front element sometimes, I need to try it with my macro lens, Keep posting as you have some great shots.
