A Simple Request - 08-01-2010, 10:04 AM

I find myself to be in awe of many of the photos that are posted here in the Nature and Wildlife sub-forum. And as a photographer who is still somewhat deficient in the long-lens category, of course I'm wondering about the lens used (as well as aperture settings) for many of the incredible shots I see here.

I have found, however, that most of the times people don't mention their gear, so sometimes I'll ask. But not always. Still, for folks like me who are trying to decide on the best fit lens for our telephoto photography needs, it would help greatly if y'all would at least mention a quick blurb about the lens? Thanks.

Michael, I find that many time the image contains the information you are looking for in the EXIF. You can view the image EXIF with various browser add-ons. I use Opanda EXIF viewer (Exif viewer : Opanda IExif - Professional EXIF / GPS / IPTC Viewer & Editor in Windows, IE & Firefox)

Thanks for the tip, John. I mostly use Seamonkey or Google Chrome. I'll look around to see if there's an exif viewer that will work with my browsers.

Well, I found an exif viewer for Seamonkey. It works OK, I suppose. But it doesn't answer my questions. It only tells me the focal length being used and does not list the name or brand or max aperture. And that's for the .jpgs that even have exif data. Many I browsed through just now do not; some only contain copyright info. So, my original request remains.

I'm with you I'd love for folks to mentions what lens they use, but I usually ask if they don't put it in the post. I try to remember that everybody doesn't use a reader and put what I'm using in my post

Your right Michael, knowing the equipment used to take a shot does help. I usually try to post what equipment I used for my shots, but I started 3 threads today and I don't think I did that with any of them. Shame on me.

I can see where this would be a little time consuming but agree, that for beginners like me, it would be great information.
