I made this abstract image of a Purple Cone flower a couple days before leaving on the Cozumel diving trip. I'm ready to get out and do some photography again soon! I was drawn to all the textures and colors waaaaay on the inside of this flower.

Excellent, Therese - I like the way the colors slowly change from the outside orange to the inside light-green.

You did a fine job on this one Therese... there's lots of depth of field at f32 and of course the composition looks great!

Therese,
I like this photo, certainly interesting to look at and the colors are very nice. I see that you used f/32 for it and it made me think about what I have read on various photography sites. Basically it is my understanding that when you stop a lens down from wide open you get a larger depth of field and you get a sharper image. I am not completely sure why this happens physically but when I have played around with my own lenses I have demonstrated to myself that this is true. As you close the diaphragm down more and more the depth of field continues to increase but the sharpness does not. What happens is that after a certain aperture the image starts to get softer and softer. My understanding is that this happens because of a phenomenon called diffraction and happens with all lenses. With my 70-300mm lens the aperture setting of maximum sharpness seems to be between f/8 and f/11. My suggestion is that you might be able to get a sharper/more detailed result by using an aperture like f/8 or f/11.

Bob | Hmmm...hi Bob...I usually use f/16 but f/32, when I used the DOF preview button, showed more to be sharp. I usually don't use f/32. Thanks for your advice!
